Telehealth Referral vs Your Own GP: Honest Trade-offs
Both your own GP and a telehealth service can legally provide a cosmetic surgery referral in Australia. Neither option is universally better — the right choice depends on your circumstances, priorities, and relationship with your doctor.
Your own GP
Advantages:
- Knows your medical history, medications, and any previous psychological treatment — all relevant to an honest cosmetic surgery assessment
- Bulk-billing may make the consultation free or significantly cheaper
- AHPRA's guidelines express a preference for the patient's usual GP
- Better positioned to flag any health concerns that could affect surgery safety
- Can coordinate with other treating doctors if needed
Disadvantages:
- Business hours only — may require waiting for an appointment
- Some patients feel embarrassed or judged discussing cosmetic surgery with a GP they see for other health matters
- Not all GPs are comfortable or experienced with cosmetic surgery referrals
Telehealth referral services
Advantages:
- Available evenings and weekends (some services run until midnight or 24/7)
- Fixed, upfront fee — no surprises
- Privacy from a doctor you see regularly
- Fast turnaround — some services deliver the referral within hours if approved
- No need to travel
Disadvantages:
- The doctor does not know your history — you must accurately disclose all relevant health information yourself
- Less likely to be bulk-billed; you pay the full fee regardless
- If your procedure may have a Medicare component (e.g. breast reduction with documented back pain), a telehealth service is less well-positioned to support that pathway
- For complex health histories, a GP who knows you will give a more thorough assessment
When telehealth is the sensible choice
Telehealth makes most sense when:
- You are healthy with no complex medical history
- You want to get the referral done on an evening or weekend
- You prefer not to discuss it with your regular GP
- The procedure is straightforward cosmetic surgery (no potential Medicare component)
- Speed is important to you
When your own GP is the better option
Your own GP is the better choice when:
- There may be a Medicare-eligible component (e.g. breast reduction, functional blepharoplasty)
- You have a complex medical or psychological history
- You have had previous surgery or take multiple medications
- You want the most thorough assessment before a significant procedure
- You may qualify for bulk-billing
One thing both have in common
Regardless of which path you choose, the referring doctor can decline to issue a referral if they do not assess the procedure as clinically appropriate. This applies equally to your own GP and to telehealth services. No service can guarantee a referral — any service that claims otherwise is not being honest with you.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. A referral from an AHPRA-registered GP is valid regardless of whether it was issued in person or by telehealth.
No. The doctor must assess the referral as clinically appropriate. They can and do decline. Services that imply guaranteed approval are not being accurate.
It depends. If your GP bulk-bills, the consultation could be free. Telehealth services charge $24.99–$49.95 with no Medicare rebate. If your GP does not bulk-bill and charges a gap, telehealth may be similar in cost.
